Meet The Owner

Hello, my name is Kathleen Bennett. I am a manatee behavioral specialist and an educator, who has been blessed to do world wide education on this very diverse eco system and it's inhabitants since 1998. I have had extensive hands-on experience teaching about and discussing the Indian River Lagoon bottlenose dolphin, the endangered Florida manatee, the incredible Florida bird life, as well as the mangroves and plants that surround us on our tours, including the history of the Indian River Lagoon.

I have completed my studies to become a marine mammal medic, and have worked for 8 years under the mentorship of Dr. Greg Bossart, head of marine mammal research and conservation at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Ft. Pierce, Florida. As a research assistant, I have worked alongside Dr. Bossart for the past 5 years participating in a government research study on dolphins in the Indian River Lagoon.

I have been an official volunteer with FWC for the state of Florida, doing the Manatee Individual Photo Identification (MIPS) program. I have lived on the shores of the Indian River Lagoon since I was 3 yrs. old. The river and the Thousand Islands have always been a huge part of my life. I have been observing and learning about the lagoon in my canoe, jon boat or kayak for almost 40 years. Whether fishing, playing, boating or just quietly enjoying nature, I have gained a love, knowledge and respect for this rich ecosystem. I feel so fortunate to be given opportunity to share what I know with you, so that you too, can experience the treasures of this unique lagoon environment.

I have always had a great love for all wildlife. Even as a child growing up in San Diego, California you would find me searching the rich tide pools of the Pacific to eagerly visiting the San Diego Zoo. I am humbled to have the opportunity to share with you this passion I have for the treasures found right here in the Indian River.
